ATLANTA Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson evaded Washington Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner after catching a 2-yard pass. Then, Robinson turned on the jets for another 67 yards.
According to Next Gen Stats, Robinson reached a career-high top speed of 21.85 mph on the play.
Unfortunately for Robinson, Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves ran 22.62 mph and tackled Robinson 7 yards short of the end zone.
"I was so mad," Robinson said. "I ain't gonna lie. Like he had an angle on me. But I saw him and was like, 'I'm gonna outrun him.' And he got my foot."
Fortunately for Atlanta, tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. scored on the very next play, one of the Falcons' four touchdowns in their 34-27 win Sunday against the Commanders at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Robinson was already responsible for a 14-yard touchdown run at that point, but the 69-yard reception not going all the way hurt.
Regardless, Robinson had himself a day. He finished with 17 carries for 75 yards and the touchdown. He also caught four of his five targets for a career-high 106 yards. Those add up to 181 yards from scrimmage overall and many accolades.
Only three other Falcons players have ever had at least 70 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving in a single game Maurice Smith in 2001, William Andrews in 1982 and Harmon Wages in 1969. They were all running backs, too.
Robinson is the first Falcons running back to record at least 175 yards from scrimmage since Devonta Freeman had 194 in Atlanta's Week 10 win against the Dallas Cowboys in 2017.
Robinson has now totaled at least 100 yards from scrimmage in 10 consecutive games, which ties for second most all-time by a Falcons player. Andrews holds the No. 1 spot at 25 straight games from the 1980-81 seasons, so it'll be a while before Robinson has an opportunity to match or surpass that.
In the nearer future, though, Robinson could extend his streak of four games with at least 100 yards from scrimmage to start a season. He's currently tied for second all-time. Five games also set by Andrews, in 1983 is the record.
Suffice to say, Robinson is performing very well in his third season.
"I'll be an overall all-around player," Robinson said. "Do it in the run game. Do it in the pass game. That's why I'm here, to show the gifts that God's given me on both sides from running routes being a receiver to being a running back. That's what I like to do. It only helps this offense; it only helps this team. For me to just get the ball in space, it doesn't matter what it looks like, that's what we love to do."
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris endorsed that, keeping the plan simple for Robinson.
"Just find more ways to get him the football," Morris said. "He's an unbelievable football player. I keep saying it, and he keeps going out there and proving it."
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. agreed.
"As long as I do that, I feel like we're in a good spot," Penix said. "There's a lot of confidence there. Obviously, the player that he is, the person that he is it shows on the field. It's great to have him on my team."
The Falcons drafted Robinson with the No. 8 overall pick in 2023, and that decision has worked out in their favor ever since.
Robinson will have to wait a bit for his next opportunity to show off. The Falcons have a bye in Week 5 and don't return to action until Oct. 13. They're scheduled to host the Buffalo Bills for a "Monday Night Football" game in Week 6.
"It sucks we have a bye week," Robinson said, "because I just want to go back to get into it next week already."
