North Korea accuses South Korea of breaching agreement

PYONGYANG, North Korea - North Korea has taken a swing at its southern neighbour over its purchase of F-35A fighter jets.

South Korea introduced the F-35A aircraft in March, and is set to take delivery of two more in coming days. All together, South Korea will take delivery of 10 F-35As this year, and forty by the end of 2021.

North Korea says the move is provactive, in that it is in contravention to an agreement between the two countries that there would be no military-build-up.

The policy research director at the Institute for American Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday outlined the country's complaint in a statement, carried by KCNA Watch.

"The south Korean authorities are about to bring in two F-35A stealth fighters from the United States again in mid-July, immediate after introduction of such fighters in March," the statement said.

"There is no room for doubt that the delivery of F-35A, which is also called an 'invisible lethal weapon.' is aimed at securing military supremacy over the neighboring countries in the region and especially opening a 'gate' to invading the north in time of emergency on the Korean peninsula."

"The south Korean authorities have thus challenged head-on the 'military agreement to implement the Panmunjom Declaration' which expressly stipulates that the build-up of armed forces against the other side should be completely stopped," the statement from the North Korean foreign affairs ministry unit said.

"The south Korean authorities readily consented to bring in the lethal weapons that would harm the compatriots at a time when positive atmosphere is created on the Korean peninsula thanks to the historic North Korean-U.S. summit meeting in Panmunjom. I can hardly fail to ask the south Korean authorities whether this is an invention from 'its imaginative power beyond common sense' clamored for by the south Korean ruler."

"The south Korean authorities are strange enough to live in such a way as to please the United States, their master, like eating mustard in tears, even though they know well that the bringing-in of the Fighters would prove to be an extremely dangerous action which will trigger our reaction and increase the military tension on the Korean peninsula," the North Korean government statement said.

"Notwithstanding the above, the south Korean authorities are talking loudly about reconciliation and cooperation between the north and the south. They are indeed impudent and pitiful as well."

"Inter-Korean relations cannot hold any prospect as long as the south Korean authorities do not avoid the fate of depending on outside forces, which compels them to make two steps backwards when the White House pulls down its check-bar while making one step forward when there is any sign of improved Nortrh Korean-U.S. relations," the statement concluded.

South Korea agreed to purchase 40 F-35As in March 2014 for $6.8 billion with final delivery to be by 2021.

At the time, South Korea became the third country to purchase F-35 aircraft. The first delivery went to Israel, while Japan also put in an order. Japan lost one of its F-35As in April in a crash over the Pacific Ocean around 85 miles east of Misawa city, in the northern part of Japan's main island of Honshu.
