Amy Winehouse under surveillance after suicide attempt

The London News.Net
Monday 6th October, 2008 (ANI)

London, Oct 6 : Troubled singer Amy Winehouse has been kept on a watch after she tried to kill herself with a knife in front of pals.

The attempt to take her own life arose after her husband Blake Fielder-Civil, 26, turned down a chance for early parole from prison, putting friends and family members on the alert.

The 25-year-old singer had earlier told her pals that it was her destiny to die young just like her Sex Pistols idol Sid Vicious, who died at the age of 21 from a heroin overdose.

A source revealed that the Rehab singer held the knife to her chest in front of her friends and said: "What is the point of living?"

"Amy said she was 'caught up in a nightmare,'" the Daily Star quoted a source as saying.

"Her friends managed to get the knife away from her but are now holding a 24-hour watch on her.

"Amy has a death wish. Her emotions are exaggerated. She is either high as a kite or, when she hears something she doesn't like, she's suicidal.

"She is all for this stupid Sid Vicious notion of dying young. She is not scared of it and believes it's her destiny," the source added.

Fielder-Civil had last month been told by prison bosses that he could leave Edmunds Hill Prison in Suffolk if he agreed to stay with his mother in Nottingham, and stick to a 7pm curfew.

However, he refused because he was desperate to return to Winehouse at their home in Camden, north London.

"He does not want to go somewhere where he can't be reunited with Amy," another source said.

Middle-aged white women drive rise in US suicides
22 Oct 2008, WASHINGTON: US suicide rates appear to be on the rise, driven mostly by middle-aged white women, researchers reported on Tuesday

]
They found a disturbing increase in suicides between 1999 and 2005 and said the pattern had changed in an unmistakable way - although the reasons behind the change are not clear. The overall suicide rate rose 0.7% during this time, but the rate for white men aged 40 to 64 rose 2.7% and for middle-aged women 3.9%, the team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore found.

“The biggest increase that we have seen between 1999 and 2005 was the increase in poisoning suicide in women - that went up by 57%," said Susan Baker, a professor in injury prevention with a special expertise in suicide. “Historically, suicide-prevention programs have focused on groups considered to be at highest risk - teens and young adults of both genders as well as elderly white men. This research tells us we need to refocus our resources to develop prevention programs for men and women in their middle years."

Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the US and Baker said the changes are substantial.
